Founded by The Resort Group PLC, the Cape Verde Foundation is a very special organisation that exists to enrich the lives of children in Cape Verde. The core aim of the Foundation is to make positive, long-term contributions to the development of the country, through assisting with the improvement of fundamental issues such as education and healthcare.

In the years since the Cape Verde Foundation was launched, the organisation has been committed to helping local children and young people gain better access to schooling and good health initiatives through a large variety of projects. It’s supported new school buildings by providing essential equipment for classrooms – including chairs, desks, teaching materials and stationary – as well as vital kitchen equipment to ensure every child in school has a good meal in their stomachs made from fresh local produce. This, in particular, has proven to make a fantastic difference – good meals make for good learning, and the provisions have encouraged higher attendance, which in turn improves the quality of education the schools are able to deliver.

In addition, the Cape Verde Foundation has provided medical support for both young and old, as well as further investment for education and training facilities, a kindergarten, and ongoing support for welfare projects that support the local community in Cape Verde.

The Resort Group PLC and the Cape Verde Foundation

The Cape Verde Foundation was the brainchild of Rob Jarrett, CEO and Founder of The Resort Group PLC. It was Rob’s relationship with the Islands, his love of the Cape Verde community and his connections with the local Government, that made him want to give something back.

Today, the Foundation is organised and managed by The Resort Group PLC staff from right across the company – a Group-wide effort committed to aiding social development, with a particular focus on the educational needs of future generations.

New Sports Equipment and New Opportunities for Students

In a recent project earlier this year, a team of three long-term supporters of the Cape Verde Foundation – Kevin Thornton, Chanelle Ruddock and Stuart Campbell – collected donations of sports equipment in the UK for schools in Espargos, on the Island of Sal. Making up kits that contained shirts, shorts, gloves, and various training balls, the team equipped some 1,200 students at Escola Nova school for sporting activities, before extending the effort to a further 850 students at the school of Pretoria.

The Cape Verde Foundation also helped put on a Summer School for students in Espargos this year, with the aim of helping children of all ages reach a higher level of learning before returning to normal term time after the holiday period.

In addition, the children of Pretoria School were treated to a study visit to the Viveiro Botanical Gardens on Sal thanks to sponsorship from the Cape Verde Foundation. Five classes were sponsored to make the visit, which amounted to 170 children aged between nine and eleven years, as well as their teachers. It was a great opportunity for the students to see the many different species of animals and plants at the Gardens, and learn hands-on about biological science while doing so. The Cape Verde Foundation saw to it that the entrance fees for all 170 students and their teachers were paid for and that everyone in attendance had a meal during the day.

The Amazing Commitment from Staff at The Resort Group PLC

All of these great things are made possible thanks to the many generous donations the Cape Verde Foundation receives, as well as the dedication and support from The Resort Group PLC and its fantastic staff.

Indeed, there has always been a tremendous commitment from the whole of The Resort Group PLC workforce, whose members are more than keen to roll up their sleeves and help raise money for underprivileged children in Cape Verde. From regular “Dress Down Fridays” to JustGiving campaigns (this year we’re raising money to provide a €10 gift card to each child attending the Cape Verde Foundation Christmas party), The Resort Group PLC offices are constantly going the extra mile for the Cape Verde Foundation, ensuring funds are raised to ensure local children have food to eat and clothes on their back, and that Cape Verde’s schools and orphanages are always supported.

But we’re always looking to do more. This year, The Resort Group PLC’s various offices were challenged to raise as much money as possible. Each department – Admin, Customer Services, Sales Support, and Marketing & Accounts – were given a whole month each to try and make a difference, with only one team being able to attain the accolade of raising the most money from their efforts. From charity auction nights to smoothie competitions to office leg-wax-athons – The Resort Group PLC staff have shown commitment to the Cape Verde Foundation quite literally from head to toe.
